Prof. Yael Latzer, Conference Chair
Yael Latzer, DSc, a certified psychotherapist and family and couples therapist, holds BA and MA degrees in Clinical Social Work and a DSc from the Technion Medical School in Haifa.
She held a two-year (1989-1991) fellowship position at the Psychoanalytic Institute, Menninger Foundation, in Topeka, Kansas, USA, where she trained in the treatment of eating disorders.
She is founder and Director of the Institute for the Treatment and Study of Eating Disorders in the Division of Psychiatry at Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences at the University of Haifa.
Professor Latzer has served as head of various academic programs, including family, trauma programs and a clinical MA program. She also developed an MA nutrition program, which was opened in 2008 with an emphasis on behavioral and psychological related factors, and has been the head of the program since its establishment. Professor Latzer has published over 125 articles and book chapters, scientific and clinical journals and has edited four books on various aspects of eating disorders. She developed an innovative rehabilitation program for young women with eating disorders in a residential hostel setting and received the Leonore & Larry Zusman – JDC Prize for excellence in the field of social services in Israel.
Professor Latzer is Past President of the Israeli Academy for Eating Disorders.
Dr. Rachel Bachner-Melman
Rachel Bachner-Melman, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who specializes in the research and treatment of eating disorders. She earned a doctorate and post- doctorate in clinical psychology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and lectures in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and the MA Clinical Psychology Program at the Ruppin Academic Center in Emek Hefer, and in the Psychology Department of the Hebrew University. She has worked with eating disorder patients in various outpatient and inpatient settings, including Hadassah University Medical Center and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer. She has published over forty articles and book chapters on the psychology and genetics of eating disorders and other psychopathologies. Dr. Bachner-Melman is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) and served from 2009 to 2012 as Co- Chair of the AED Sisterhood, Chapter and Affiliate Committee where she continues to represent the Israel Association for Eating Disorders. She is a member of the Eating Disorders Research Society and Treasurer of the Israel Association for Eating Disorders.
Prof. Daniel Stein, MD
Daniel Stein, MD, is a certified psychiatrist and child and adolescent psychiatrist. He has directed the Pediatric Psychosomatic Department, Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Israel since 1998. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry, Head of the Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and instructor at the School of Psychotherapy, all at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, University of Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv, Israel. Professor Stein’s main interests include child and adolescent psychiatry, eating disorders and suicidology. He specializes in psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Professor Stein is a member of numerous Israeli and international organizations, including the International Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Academy of Eating Disorders, the Eating Disorders Research Society and the European College of Neuropsychiatry. Recently Professor Stein has edited two books titled Eating Disorders: Diagnosis, Epidemiology, Etiology and Prevention; and Treatment and Recovery of Eating Disorders. He has authored over 130 articles and book chapters published in prominent international journals and books. Professor Stein is a co-founder and Past Vice President of the Israeli Academy of Eating Disorders.
